What USCIS asks for

You are a member of associations that require outstanding achievements. Recognized experts judge who can join.

Based on 8 CFR 214.2(o)(3)(iii)(B)

My take

I'm an IEEE Senior Member, and it didn't help my case much. A membership only counts when experts admit people for outstanding achievements, and the top groups take years to join, so unless you truly qualify, spend the time elsewhere.

What usually counts

  • Groups that admit members for outstanding achievements, judged by recognized experts

What usually does not count

  • Groups that anyone can join for a fee
  • Member levels based mostly on years of experience

How to build it

  1. Check if you qualify. Read the rules to join. If they are about years or a fee, it will not make your case.
  2. Apply if you qualify. IEEE Senior Member needs about 10 years in the field and three references from Senior Members or Fellows.
  3. Keep the requirements page. Proof of how selective the group is matters as much as your acceptance.

Proof to save

  • The acceptance letter
  • The page that lists the membership rules

Questions

Does IEEE Senior Member count for the O-1A?

People often use it. In my case, it did not help much. Treat it as extra proof, not as one of your three.

This is what worked for me, not legal advice. Talk to an immigration lawyer about your case.
