Professional publications, major trade publications or major media published material about you and your work.
Based on 8 CFR 214.2(o)(3)(iii)(B)
My take
Press gets easier once you have something to talk about, and a paper or a launch gives a journalist a story. Mine was an article in The New Indian Express about an app I built. It has to be about you; a short quote in someone else's story is weak.
What usually counts
- Articles in major media about you and your work
- Features in professional or major trade publications
- Interviews about your work on shows with a real audience
What usually does not count
- Articles you wrote (those are scholarly articles)
- A short quote in an article about another topic
- Paid placements and press releases
How to build it
- Have a result to share. A paper, a launch, an open source milestone or a result with numbers.
- Send your story to writers. Find writers who cover your field. Send a short email with the result.
- Say yes to interviews. Podcasts and newsletters in your field count when they have a real audience.
- Save every article. Keep the outlet name, date, author and audience size with each article.
Proof to save
- The article
- The outlet name, date and author
- Audience or circulation numbers
Questions
Does a quote in an article count as press?
Usually it is weak. The article must be about you and your work. A feature or an interview about you is much stronger.
